ashtanga program w/ Shelley enlow

Ashtanga means “eight-limbs” and is referring to the eight-limb practice of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali. These group yoga classes focuses on practices within the Ashtanga system. The ideals learned during yoga practice are meant to be applied in everyday life, bringing about a more stable mind and body. This gives students a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

The Ashtanga program I teach is a combination of home practice with once a week in-person guidance. It includes a guided pranayama and Mysore Ashtanga class every Friday morning. And once a month a guided full Primary Series plus yoga stūtra chanting class.

So why this type of group setting? You’ve heard the saying, “It takes a village”. Well, in yoga the journey takes a village and needs three things to work - the teacher (giving you the teachings), the student (to learn the teachings) and the community (to support each other’s learning). These group classes are our village!

Come and experience the energy of the group and meet yoga friends who will share and support your journey. Our yoga community welcomes everyone! Please join us.

Guided Pranayama
@ 7:30 - 8:00am

Friday — April 5, 12, 19 and 26

Skillful breathing is the foundation of a good yoga practice. This class focuses on the mechanics of yogic breathing exercises (pranayama).  With consistent practice, pranayama can help to calm the mind, balance the nervous system, enhance the immune system, increase energy levels, decrease stress levels and deepen inner awareness. These practices aid students in developing awareness and skill around breath, bandhas and mental focus.

Pranayama Video Replay! Pranayama class is recorded each week and replay emailed to students who have attended the class or are part of our monthly Ashtanga Program .

Mysore Ashtanga Yoga
@ 8:00 - 9:30am

Friday — April 5, 12, 19 and 26

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic yoga practice based on vinyāsa which synchronizes breath with movement and visual focal points.  With growing proficiency, the effect of this practice is simultaneously calming yet energizing. It leads to a more sophisticated sensory understanding, self-awareness, physical strength, and mental focus. Mysore is a unique Ashtanga yoga class where students receive one-on-one instruction in a group setting. Students begin by learning the Primary Series one posture at a time and progress at their own pace. The teacher explains the practice with hands-on adjustments, verbal instructions and visual demonstration.

Guided Primary Series
@ 8:00 - 9:30am

Sunday — April 7 / May 12

The Primary Series is the first set of yoga postures, considered most important and foundational, that are taught in Ashtanga Yoga. In this class you will be guided through the complete Primary Series with the traditional vinyāsa count that links the breath and 48 postures. This practice helps practitioners deepen inward focus, extend the natural breath, and is meant to help detoxify and purify the body. This class is not suitable for beginning yoga students. However, if you have yoga experience and wish to try the class, please do — you are welcome to come and participate in as much of the class as you wish and then watch to see what the series looks like! The beginning of the class is mainly standing postures with the later part comprised of seated postures which are accessible to many people. If you like it, over time you can keep coming to learn more.

Yoga Sūtras Chanting
@ 7:00 - 7:45am

Sunday — April 7 / May 12

To learn the Yoga Sūtras of Patanjali is an extraordinary study that gives you the knowledge of the Self; an exploration of your consciousness.  You can think of the sūtras as an inner map of your own consciousness that you can begin to travel through slowly overtime.  During this practice class we will use the traditional system of chanting (listening and then repeating after the teacher) to become familiar with the 51 sūtras from the first chapter, samādhi pādaḥ. Overtime by learning this way, memorization comes naturally and the vocabulary to learn the key concepts becomes easier. My hope is that this monthly class offering will help inspire you to begin your own study of this influential text on Yoga.
