There are many ways to start learning Ashtanga Yoga at the Ashtanga Yoga School of Spokane. Please read below and find the best option that suits your learning style.
1) introduction to Ashtanga course
If you are new to Ashtanga we highly recommend this course! It is a month long, 4 day a week introduction to Ashtanga yoga suitable for the absolute beginner or those making a transition from other yoga disciplines to Ashtanga. During the month you will be working one-on-one with a teacher in the Mysore class. By learning this way, you’ll quickly become comfortable with the Mysore style learning format and see how effective the method can be in helping you create a personal practice. This is a serious, fun, and safe environment for you to start your practice of Ashtanga yoga.
Mysore is a self-practice where students practice the Ashtanga series at their own pace with a teacher assisting each student individually. This course will prepare you to participate in our ongoing Mysore classes. During the month students will learn to memorize the sequence of postures that make up the foundation of the introductory series. We are able to give one-on-one attention to our new students and gradually introduce them to Ashtanga yoga in a way that is right for each individual. Students move through the series at their own pace allowing the body to open naturally and only working new postures when physically and emotionally ready.
Choose from two course time options
- Course A: 6:00am - 7:00am Monday through Thursday
- Course B: 8:00am - 9:00am Monday through Thursday
Both courses have a 4-days a week practice schedule however, it is common that students will practice less than this depending on individual circumstance. We recommend attending a minimum of 3-days a week to consolidate your learning.

2) mysore classes
Mysore class is the traditional way of learning and practicing Ashtanga yoga where you develop an independent practice with the support and guidance from a teacher. The teacher teaches each student individually through verbal cues and hands on adjustments in a group setting. This class is for everyone; from complete beginners to advanced practitioners and for people of all ages from 12 and up. We request beginners or new to Ashtanga students attend one of our Introduction to Ashtanga Courses prior to attending the Mysore classes, however if you have attended our guided classes and would like to drop-in to the Mysore classes we can help you establish a practice on which to build. 3) guided classes
Our guided classes are a good place to try dropping into a class at AYS. Guided classes help introduce and reinforce the vinyasa (the linking of breath and postures) of Ashtanga yoga. In these classes the vinyasas are counted out loud and all students follow along together accordingly. Each guided class progresses in level based on the skill level needed to participate safely. 4) private instruction
You can begin comfortably at our studio with one-on-one instruction. Private lessons are scheduled M - F daytime hours.
