Primary series level 2 in-depth study
aug 31 - sept 4, 2016
This five-day intensive will give you a deep link into Ashtanga Yoga's Primary Series including such aspects as asana, pranayama, bandhas, vinyasa, transitions, adjustments, modifications and more.
Below are descriptions of the five central themes for this In-Depth Study:
1) Personal practice in the Mysore class
The Mysore class will provide you with an excellent opportunity to work one on one with David, to become immersed in David's unique approach to asana study within the ashtanga lineage. This is the key session of the day, where you build the foundation for your entire study of yoga both as a student and teacher. You will receive intensive guidance and direction from David to help you develop maturity and soul in your practice.
This will be a concentrated study of the traditional ashtanga pranayama sequence as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. Participants will gain knowledge of pranayama, the fourth yogic limb, and lay a foundation for establishing a personal breathing practice. The classes will include the basic elements for developing ujjayi (victorious breath), and practicing such techniques as viloma (interrupting the breath), and khumbhaka (retaining the breath). These rigorous daily sessions aim to help you breathe with more skill and awareness in your asana practice.
Chanting - chanting is an experiential, breath centered practice that combines the following aspects of yoga study: asana (posture), pranayama (breath control), dhyana (meditation), japa mantra (repetition of sacred sounds) jnana (intellectual study). The chanting portion of this class emphasizes the use of the above combination of techniques in order to expand your awareness of the potential breadth of knowledge that is available to you through your daily practice. Working with your breath, voice, and the internal vibratory sound qualities of chanting can teach you how to apply the foundational principles of practice with more subtlety and accuracy.
4) Study of the sacred texts
The intellectual study of yoga is an essential means of ensuring progress and maturity through practice. To be exposed to yoga theory is an important part of using of mind to enter into inward directed states of concentration and meditative awareness. This is the part of the intensive where you begin to learn how to apply the philosophical/theoretical basis of yoga to your practice. You begin to see how the theory and the practice are not separate, but rather are two aspects of the same applied, practical study. Meditating on the theoretical teachings helps bring you into more intelligent, accurate and subtle alignment.
5) Asana study and theory
A variety of different topic chosen by David, including: Adjustment clinics, Restoratives, Asana study and theory, Asana Kitchens, Talks by David, Mantra and music, Modifications (prenatal, etc.), and Diet. This session will end with Sanyama - a time to investigate deeper and at your own pace the techniques introduced during the In-Depth Study.
