Class Type

 

Mysore class

Ashtanga yoga is learned in what’s called a “Mysore Style” class where you develop an individualized practice with the support and guidance of a teacher.  The teacher teaches each student individually through verbal cues and hands on adjustments, but does not speak to the whole class as a group.  The room is largely silent.  This was the teaching method of the late yoga master Sri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, South India, hence the source of the name “Mysore Style”.  In a Mysore style class you memorize the Ashtanga sequences by learning one posture at a time.  As you repeat and master the postures within the given sequences, you gradually increase your knowledge and create an independent, mature personal practice.  More info >

Primary Series

In this class you will be guided through the full primary series with it's traditional count.  If you have not learned the full primary series sequence you will practice up to the pose you have learned in the Mysore room.  If you have experience with yoga but are new to Ashtanga and don't know the sequence the teacher will stop you at an appropriate pose.

In this class you will be guided through the foundational elements of the beginning and ending postures that make up the book ends of Ashtanga yoga - sun salutations, standing postures and finishing poses.  This class is recommended for all levels and is the perfect place to try dropping into a class.

 

INTRODUCTION TO ASHTANGA course

New to Ashtanga?  This is the place to begin!  Ashtanga yoga is learned in what’s called a “Mysore Style” class where you develop an individualized self-practice with the support and guidance of a teacher.  This month-long 3-day a week course will introduce you to the Mysore style class.  During the month you will be learning one posture at a time and memorizing a pre-determined series of poses as you go.  As you become skilled in performing a posture you'll be taught the next posture in the sequence.  Day by day, posture by posture, through concentration and repetition you will gradually learn the asanas and transitions that make up Ashtanga's first series.  By attending class in this setting, you'll quickly become comfortable with the Mysore style learning format and you'll see how effective the method can be in helping you create a personal practice.

In honor of Ashtanga tradition, moon days are observed as yoga holidays.  AYSS is closed on moon days and classes are not held.  Please enjoy the day of rest.

Monthly Memberships

Practice on a consistent basis with unlimited class access.  Our monthly memberships are recurring and automatically renew each month to the credit card of your choice on the day of the month they were originally purchased.

Good for one person unlimited class access.

Monthly Family Membership - $170
Good for unlimited class access for all persons listed on the family membership (up to 3 people.)  A family membership can be a couple, parent(s) w/ children over the age of 14, or even adult siblings.
